In the manga, Akito is female but was brought up as a boy by her mother, Ren, and it is not revealed until Chapter 97 that Akito is biologically female. After the curse is broken, Akito begins dressing as and living as a woman, and in the final chapter Shigure, whom she is in love with, moves in with her.
